Rachel Hulin and Shoot! The Blog

Rachel Hulin writes Shoot! The Blog for Photo Shelter.

I've read it just about everyday since its inception. She covers all sorts of interesting people, exhibits and the world of photography. Earlier this week, she wrote about Mark Seliger's images of the new class of stars and starlets that were featured in the August issue of Vanity Fair. LINK to Seligers images.

Also, a very cool set of images from UK Photographer Steven Schofield of people who dress up like characters from televison and movie series. LINK to Schofield Images

Rachel, while on her Vanity Fair journey wrote me about my aerials for the magazine. Yesterday she ran a few of the images along with some portfolio material and my responses to her questions about gear, aerials and working for VF. LINK to article.

It is one of the more interesting blogs out there, she covers such a wide variety of subjects and styles.

Two other blogs I find worthwhile are Rob Haggart's A Photo Editor and Heather Morton's blog, written from the perspective of a freelance Art Buyer in Toronto.

Virginia Tourism Project

Last fall, I shot a forty-two portrait gig for Virginia Tourism. The images are being used on the Virginia web site, tourism guide, regional ads and to sell Virginia to the tourism industry.

VTC took a selection of my images and created a Virginia Media Guide that is distributed internationally.

The shoots ran the gamut from the fastest Oyster Shucker, to guides to a famous luthier to --- well, 42 passionate Virginians.

New Photoshelter Widget

I recently pushed three-hundred plus aerials from my AerialStock.com site to PhotoShelter.

This is a pretty cool way to display your images. You can place the widget into a blog or your web site or send it via email.

Gustavo Marx | No 3. in a series

Gus lives in Brazil. He shoots amazing images of incredibly beautiful Brazilian women. He won two first prizes at IPA and picked up nine honorable mentions for his striking portraits. Simple images. Medium format. Amazing skin tones.

Gus's back story is pretty cool. Saw his future wife at a distance while attending a party. Fell in love. Flew to the town where she lived. Convinced her that he was the one and married her.

Gus lived in NY for a while and then returned to Brazil. He signed up with a hot rep and is now working internationally.

He is good. Very good. More than anything. He has a good soul, a good heart and is the devil behind the camera. I have several of his prints in my house as he does of mine.

Pop Photo Profile

Zach Honig, a young photographer and writer, interned at Popular Photography magazine this past summer. Zach suggested running a series of articles on photographers who have speciality niches to his editors. They agreed and ran the first piece in the Behind the Lens series late last week.

Zach asked some pretty good questions and his follow-up replies were insightful and challenging.

It was a honor to be invited to be a part of this project.
I am looking forward to reading and viewing the images in the series.

Grace Under Pressure - continued

On Monday I took the train to New York. I was in a rush to get to the Apple store to prepare for my APA Presentation. I called ahead to the NY store and set-up an appointment with a Pro Care specialist to help me with Keynote 3. If you don't have ProCare - get it. The $100 a year is well worth it. I spend an hour (actually, over an hour) with Brad and Heather from the SoHo store on Prince Street. Incredible folks - Brad took my images and songs from my external hard drives, walked me through Keynote and set-up a very good presentation. Without them, the presentation would have been much less than what it was.

(With ProCare you get up to an hour instruction with a "guru" - one on one - (one hour per week) and it is all part of your ProCare package.)

Constance (APA National) and Julie from APA NY came to the presentation - and special kudo's go to my friends who came - Thanks to Kim Hubbard, Ira Block, Ron Jautz and David Burnett. (it was great to see some smiling faces in the audience)

Today, I helped my friend Karen Kasmauski for the third year running. Karen runs the 10 day National Geographic High School scholars program where students from around the country come to DC and learn from working pros with Karen leading the way. The goal for the day was to show the kids how to create compelling portraits with available light. We had this amazing room with large windows we could control how much light flowed through - by varying our distance, amount of light and using available reflectors (newspapers work great in a pinch) we could change the character of light. The kids had fun, learned a few tricks and it felt good to show them how to do more with less.

So, how does this all tie into Grace Under Pressure? I was rushed and frustrated with myself when heading off to New York and felt off. Brad and Heather took me under their gracious wing, settled me down and created an excellent presentation for me. The pressure was on and and I greatly appreciate their efforts.

Tomorrow I start an incredible portrait project that takes us to six cities over the next month. This will be fun!

APA Pro Sessions with Apple

Next Monday (the 18th) I'll be in Manhattan to speak at the Apple store in Soho at 6:30pm. APA (Advertising Photographers of America) is hosting a series of presentations with Apple at stores across America. It is a pretty interesting concept and I am honored to be a part of the project. I'll show some personal work from Haiti and two small aerial projects.

Digital Camera World Magazine

Yesterday, I wandered into the Books-A-Million in Old Town Alexandria and picked-up a copy of the May issue of Digital Camera World, a photo magazine from the United Kingdom.

Digital Camera interviewed me for this issue and I wanted to see how the images looked in the profile. I have to say, I was quite pleased with the spreads and reproduction.

A few facts got scrambled. They think I live in Miami (where I was born) and that I am older than I am (oh well) and that I'm working on a book about Greenland. (I'm not) These things happen and it is not a big deal - what is cool is I got to talk about safety and preparation a bit and not too much about the technical side of things.

One thing I liked, they asked me about influences and people I admire. So, I was able to mention Jay Maisel and Arnold Newman as influences and of course, to talk about friends whose work I admire and respect.

I mentioned Gustavo Marx from Brazil, Brian Skerry from NGS, Tucker and of course, Harvey and Allard.

The image below was shot for Vanity Fair last fall and was included in the article.
